I don’t have time this evening to totally discuss the changes that are happening at Google right now that will absolutely effect your business, but it’s huge. I wanted to take just a quick moment to mention it here because it is so vital to your business and to mobile marketing.
For some time now Google has offered a service called Google Checkout. Well, first, they are replacing that with Google Wallet – so if you have a payment module in your shopping cart that utilizes Google Checkout, you better look into this and see if your software has a module or patch that will work with Google Wallet in the immediate future.
This is a really new fangled technology which will allow folks to make purchase with their mobile phone – simply by waving the phone near a component that will read an app. In other words, your cell phone will become a debit card or credit card… Obvious questions arise concerning security, but we can discuss that later.
The point I want to make here is simply that this shift is coming. I’ve been saying it for some time. Google announced a few years back that their were shifting all their attention to mobile. Not some of it. Not most of it. All of it. And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing.
Other countries have been quicker to adopt the cell phone, mobile marketing and mobile commerce. We are behind the other countries here in the U.S. In fact, this concept of making purchases on my phone is just down right scary to me at first glance. Nonetheless, other countries have embraced this technology and are doing well.
Google’s emphasis on making mobile their first objective is, of course, appropriate since there are more cell phones than people, and more cell phones than cars, or tvs. That’s hard to wrap our minds around, but we have to if we are to market our businesses effectively. It absolutely will have to include mobile.
